Sky
A series of paintings inspired by the beautiful skies in Thanet
DRAMATIC SKIES OVER THANET
Margate, in Thanet, East Kent is transforming into an exciting place after many years of decline. If you were to visit you might be surprised by the transformation taking place, both in the town as well as the surrounding area. Originally an island, Thanet is positioned in such a way that it is surrounded by water on three sides, allowing for vast skies and dramatic light. It is almost impossible not to be mesmerised and spellbound by the dramatic rolling cloud formations, the subtle changes of colour throughout the day and the exotic fiery sunsets that can be seen regularly around the coastline from Margate to Ramsgate.
The English romantic landscape painter J M W Turner was one of the first visitors to notice and paint these beautiful transient skies. "The skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe" wrote Turner.
These abstract paintings, prints and drawings are an attempt to capture the fleeting sculptural cloud formations, the subtle changes of light and shade and the deeply contrasting colours that make up these beautiful skies.
